India has progressively opened its markets to foreign investment for direct investment, which is allowed with ceiling on the percentage of foreign ownership in most industries. Where there is a limit, this may be waived on a case by case basis, and is being progressively phased out.

The process has been further smoothed by easing the entry procedures, which have been all together eliminated in most industries. In cases where approval is required, the applications are simple and are processed through a "single window".

Last but not least, a new regime for the repatriation of money has come into existence, allowing easy repatriation of capital investment, profits/dividends and royalties.
